Campervan Road Adventures!

Adventure means more than hiking past rocky outcrops, visiting old haunts, and seeing family!  Adventure means stumbling into challenging circumstances!

We were in Florida to help our son move into his new apartment in Orlando for his new job with Lockheed-Martin when the lock failed on the rear doors of our van!  We could not access anything in our “garage”, including tools, water, some clothes, shower supplies, extra food, camping gear, and much else.  Yikes!

You’d think that we could just open the doors from inside the van, but no, that wasn’t possible because the campervan build inside covered up the door access.  After some exploration, we realized that getting into the rear of our van lay outside our skill set.  We needed help.  We called around, but who wants to risk ruining the campervan by chopping through the build so as to break in.  Nobody wanted to take it on.

That is, nobody except Doug, who lived with his chickens and ducks out in the country south of Orlando.  Our son shuttled us down and, after a couple of uncertain days where Doug had to take out our bed, and the lining and insulation on the door, he got our door open (although the price of a new latch for the door exceeded $800 not including the labor!)

And, after all of that, we still had time to hang around my son’s new apartment to receive the incoming furniture, so, although he ended up helping us with our broken little home more than we expected, we were able to achieve what we came to Florida to do!
